Some jokes and references may be lost on those players who didn’t live through the original Bush and Clinton administrations but for gamers of a certain age there’s no cultural cow that’s left un-butchered. The immediate pleasure of Retro City Rampage is its bevy of sometimes stupid and sometimes highly crude pop culture references. There’s still a decent bit of variety in the gameplay, including missions which are jokey homages to classic 8-bit games ( Super Mario Bros, Paperboy, etc) and lots of weapons and vehicles to play around with (dozens and dozens of each, to be a little more exact). There a various missions, most of which are of the ‘go get this and kill anyone that gets in the way’. Player is also trying to escape back to his own time with the help of a not so subtle Doc Brown parody. Your character, ‘Player,’ is doing some low level henchman work for a cartoonish supervillain in the futuristic hell pit that is Theftopolis (and you thought San Andreas was a rough place to live).

It’s already being described as Grand Theft Auto filtered through a Nintendo Entertainment System and I’ll be darned if it doesn’t deliver on that promise and bring the old school thrills I’m always hunting for. The gameplay is distinct but reminiscent of a thousand childhood favorites, the bright 8-bit sights and sounds are a delight, and the obscene overflow of pop culture references and jokes had me laughing out loud at a shockingly regular rate.

With UMD production discontinued and the PS Store on PSP closed, Retro City Rampage: DX will likely mark the final PSP game ever released, but it can still be downloaded onto your PSP via your download list, or via USB using your PS3 or PC.įor those of you who missed out on the PS4 physical version of Retro City Rampage back in 2014, Provinciano will be selling more copies from the official Vblank Store starting this Friday at 10am PT. The handheld will always hold a place in my heart, both as a gamer and as a developer. The PSP was one of the first platforms I worked on after entering the industry, and RCR:DX’s PSP version is my opportunity to give it a nice send off. Thanks to the success of the other versions, “the dream of having the game on UMD suddenly seemed viable,” so he “started finishing it up as a side project, but unfortunately, UMD production halted without warning and made that impossible.”ĭeciding to release it anyway digitally, Provinciano added: Explaining why Retro City Rampage was brought to PSP, developer Brian Provinciano said the port dates back to 2009, but was shelved in favor of the PS Vita version.
